A. Diversity of Organism in an
Ecosystem
Diversity of organism is observe due
to the differences
A
great number of organisms live on earth. Life exists everywhere, in the air,
land, in soil, and on the ground. Name organisms around your house. You will
find many kinds of organism there. People, cat, dogs, hens, banaa trees are
some example. Diversity of organism exists because there are some differences
among species, such, as the size, structure, form, color, and function. Based on
your observation it is clear that your classmates also vary. The diversity
exists because there are varieties among species and among individuals within a
species. For instance, the structure from of dog is different from the
structure of cat. The colour of cats fur are different from one another. A
variety is the appearance of a particular characteristic that make one organism
different from the other within the same species. There are even organ
differences within an individual.
The Importance of Diversity for Organism Preservation
Diversity
of organism are also found among the member of a particular species. Diversity
is very important for organism preservation. Animal or plants having more
varieties will be more everlasting and they will survive more in the environment.
On the other hand, animals and plant having fewer varieties will be less
everlasting. Let us pay a close attention to the following example. Two
populations live in a particular habitat. Population A have 10 species while
population B has only 4 species. During their interaction with their
environment, it is found out that there are only 5 varieties of population A
successful. At the same time only 1 variety of population B is successful.
Human Activities that Can Affect the
Variety of Organisms
The
variety of each group of organism is not stable and always change. there are
organism whose varieties increase, decrease or even remain the same. The
degradation of variety can happen naturally or due to human interference. Human
interference has great contribution in reducing the varieties of organism
nowadays. Human activities may threaten the variety of organism. Deforestation for
crop, farms, factory, road construction, housing, and overuse of pesticides,
insecticides, and fungicides are examples of human activities that can threaten
varieties of or organism.
Human Effort to Preserve Varieties of
Organism
The
varieties of organism benefit people economically, socially, or even cultural.
Therefore, we should preserve the existence of varieties. The following are
some ways to preserve varieties of organism.
B .The Influence or Population
Density on the Environment
The
number of human population keeps on increasing year after year. No one knows exactly how many people
live on earth and when the population growth will stop. The human population
rapidly grows after several hundred years. More population needs more things to
be provided.
Counting the Average of Population
Change per Year
The
population change rate (CR) per year can be shown by percentage. This rate is
obtained by counting birth rate (BR) and death rate (DR). The formula of CR is
CR = (BR-DR/1000) x
100
Human Population Growth in Indonesia
According
to the population cencus in 2000 there are 203.5 million people living in
Indonesia. It became 206.1 million people in 2001. The average of population
growth is approximately 2.3% per year. If this growth remains, the Indonesia population
will be doubled in 20 years, so it would be 300 million people in 2010. If the
growth is continuing it will lead to population explosion. This is surely not
expected. Therefore, the family planning programme has to be encouraged to slow
down the population growth.
Problem Arising From Population
Density
The
population density will lead to some problem in living since people will do
anything to support their living.
C. Natural Resources as Environmental
Attraction
Natural
resources are raw materials from the environment which are used by organism
including human for their continuity of life.
Renewable Resources are the Natural
Resources that Can Be Reproduced
Natural
resources that are renewable resources:
wood to build houses is from forest, water in your kitchen might come
from a wellspring in a remote place.
Non Renewable Resource
These
substances are nonrenewable resources. Nonrenewable resources are resources
that cannot be reproduced by natural processes. Metal such as aluminum, iron,
silver, uranium, gold, and petroleum are nonrenewable resources. Some minerals
like phosphor need 500 or 1000 year to be provided in a soil layer of 2.5 cm
deep. These kinds of minerals are considered as nonrenewable. Hence, substances
that take a long time to be renewed in natural condition are considered as
nonrenewable resources. Show petroleum mining as one of the non renewable
resources.
The Supply of Natural Resources
The
supply of natural resources in the earth is not always in big amount and
abundant. Many of those resources have limited supply. Therefore, we need to be
wise and thrifty when we use these resources. Some limited natural resources
are petroleum, minerals, and other mining products. In addition to limited
supply, the distribution of the resources in the earth is not even. Some
countries are rich in petroleum and mineral supply, but others are very poor.
Countries that have much supply of petroleum are known as petroleum exporters
(APEC).
